Avoid Complications with These Filler Do’s and Don’ts

Thanks to cosmetic advancements over the last few decades, services like dermal injections have become more accessible than ever before. The steps you take before and after receiving your injections can affect the recovery process and what the end results of your filler may look like.

Getting filler is a great, simple way to boost confidence and rewind the clock while still maintaining a “natural” look. To get the most out of your results, it’s important to know how to care for your body before and after the procedure is done. Follow these guidelines to help ensure a safe, positive experience with filler!

DO: Find a Knowledgeable, Certified Nurse Injector

The first step in your dermal injection journey should be finding a reputable, experienced provider. Your injector should make sure you leave your consultation feeling educated, comfortable, and ready to make the decision best suited for you! Together, you should go over treatment options and any initial questions/concerns you may have.

Urban You has a staff with over 40 years of combined experience that would love to help boost your confidence! Our nurse injectors will help find a personal treatment plan catered to your wants and needs at your consultation. Urban You is recognized by Allergan as one of America’s Top 250 providers for filler and Botox.

DON’T: Use Blood Thinners for 7-10 Days Before your Appointment

The use of blood thinners, whether they’re over-the-counter, prescribed, or herbal, increases the risk of heavy bruising, bleeding, or other complications during and after your treatment. If you’re taking a prescribed blood thinner, be sure to discuss getting a filler with your doctor and nurse injector at your consultation. Avoid consuming alcohol for 5-7 days before your appointment and during the healing process, as it can act as a blood thinner.

Over-the-counter blood thinners include: Aspirin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin

Holistic blood thinners include: Fish oil, Ginseng, Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort

DO: Inform your Nurse Injector of any History of Cold Sores

This step is particularly important if you’re getting filler in or around your lips. The needles and injectables may increase the risk of outbreaks or other cold sore-related complications. To reduce the chances of a flare-up, inform your nurse injector so they can prescribe an antiviral before your appointment!

DON’T: Get Dermal Injections if you are Pregnant or Breastfeeding

There isn’t currently enough research to prove that injectables do not affect pregnancy and unborn children. To avoid the risk of complications, wait to consider getting injections until after birth or when you’re done breastfeeding.

DO: Carve out Time to Rest and Heal After Treatment

Before your appointment, schedule a few days of recovery time to let your body heal without wearing makeup, laying out in the sun, or exercising. Doing these activities can increase the risk of infection and migrating filler. During this time, you’ll most likely develop some bruising at or around the injection site(s), which is typically more noticeable near sensitive areas such as eyes and lips. Avoid wearing makeup for 24-48 hours post-treatment to prevent infection and the spread of bacteria.

DON’T: Use Anti-Aging Topical Treatments While Healing

Avoid any type of anti-aging products before and during the healing process of your injections. Common ingredients in anti-aging products such as Retinol, Glycolic Acid, and Retinoids may increase bruising, irritation around injection sites, and the risk of infection.

DON’T: Rub, Itch, or Apply Heat to Treated Areas While Healing

If you’re experiencing pain, itching, or swelling after your injections, there are safe ways to alleviate those symptoms! Do not apply pressure, rub, or ice any irritated area for at least 24 hours to prevent the filler from moving. Avoid exposing your skin to extreme heat or sun exposure – this includes steamy showers, saunas, hot tubs, direct sunlight, and artificial tanning beds.

Tylenol is a safe over-the-counter pain reliever that doesn’t act as a blood thinner. If Tylenol isn’t an option for you, discuss other methods of pain relief with your nurse injector at your consultation.
