What Is Sofwave? The Non-Surgical Skin Tightening Treatment Grand Rapids Is Asking About

You notice it in photos first. Your jawline looks a little softer than it used to. Your neck has a crease that wasn't there last year. Your brows sit a bit lower. None of it is dramatic, but you can see it.

That's skin laxity, and it's one of the most common things our Grand Rapids clients ask us about. It's also one of the biggest reasons people are searching for non-surgical options right now. More people want to firm and lift without going under the knife, without needles, and without taking a week off.

One of the technologies getting the most attention is Sofwave. We're looking into bringing it to Urban You. Before we decide, we want to walk you through what it is, what the research says, and who it's for. Then we want to hear from you.

Why skin loosens in the first place

Your skin's firmness comes mostly from two proteins in the dermis (the layer under the surface): collagen, which gives skin structure, and elastin, which lets it bounce back. Starting in our mid-20s, the body makes a little less collagen every year. Sun exposure, stress, hormonal shifts (especially around perimenopause), and weight changes speed that up.

The result is skin that holds its shape less well. That shows up most on the jawline, under the chin, on the neck, and around the brows and eyes. Topical skincare helps with the surface, but it can't reach deep enough to rebuild that support. That's where in-office treatments come in.

What is Sofwave, and how does it work?

Sofwave is a non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound energy to improve skin laxity. No incisions, no injections. Sofwave says its technology works by stimulating the body's natural production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. It calls that "a triple threat to counteract the signs of aging" (Sofwave).

Here's the simple version:

  1. Ultrasound energy goes into the skin. Sofwave's proprietary SUPERB™ technology sends parallel ultrasound beams into the mid-dermis, about 1.5 mm deep. That's the layer where collagen and elastin live.

  2. Built-in cooling protects the surface. The handpiece cools the top layer of skin during treatment, so the energy works underneath while the surface stays comfortable.

  3. Your skin starts rebuilding. The controlled heating kicks off your body's own repair response, which makes new collagen and elastin over the following weeks and months.

In other words, Sofwave doesn't add anything to your face. It prompts your own skin to rebuild its support structure. That's why results tend to look natural: it's still your skin, just firmer.

Is Sofwave FDA-cleared? What does the research say?

Yes. According to Sofwave's safety information, the Sofwave™ System is FDA-cleared as a "non-invasive dermatological aesthetic treatment to improve facial lines and wrinkles, lift the eyebrow, and lift lax submental and neck tissue" for adults 22 and older (Sofwave Safety Information).

Its clearances also cover:

  • Temporary improvement in the appearance of cellulite

  • Improvement in the appearance of acne scars

  • Improvement of skin laxity on the upper arms

Sofwave has been reviewed and cleared for specific uses on the face, brow, under the chin, neck, and certain body areas. It's not a cure-all, and a good provider will tell you honestly whether it fits your goals.

Sofwave says the treatment "delivers visible results in a single treatment" (Sofwave FAQs). Like all collagen-building treatments, results keep developing as your skin rebuilds. Results vary from person to person.

What to expect from a Sofwave treatment

Treatment time

About 30–45 minutes for the full face and neck

Comfort

Most people feel brief heat with each pulse. Built-in cooling and numbing cream (if your provider uses it) keep it manageable.

Downtime

Little to none. Some people are pink or slightly swollen for a few hours. Most go right back to their day.

Number of sessions

Many people see results after one treatment. Your provider may recommend more based on your goals.

When results show

Some lift early on, with the biggest change as new collagen builds over about 1–3 months

Is it safe? Who shouldn't get it?

Sofwave is not right for everyone. Per Sofwave's safety information, you should not be treated if you have open wounds or lesions, severe or cystic acne, or a pacemaker or electronic implant in the treatment area.

You'll also need to talk with your provider first if you're pregnant or gave birth in the last 3 months, have an active infection or skin condition, have used isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last 6 months, or have taken blood thinners in the last 2 weeks.

Possible side effects include pain, tenderness, pigment changes, lasting redness or swelling, and bruising (Sofwave Safety Information). That's why every Urban You treatment starts with a consultation with a licensed provider.

Who is Sofwave for?

Sofwave tends to fit people who:

  • Are noticing early to moderate laxity on the jawline, neck, under the chin, or brows

  • Want visible firming without surgery, needles, or real downtime

  • Prefer gradual, natural-looking results over a dramatic change

  • Want to protect their results long-term (the "collagen banking" approach)

It's usually not the best fit for significant sagging or a lot of excess skin.

How firming fits into your personalized plan at Urban You

At Urban You, we don't believe in one-size-fits-all treatments. Every plan starts with a conversation with a clinician about your skin, your goals, and your timeline. Here's how we help with firmness and skin quality today:

  • Microneedling builds new collagen to improve texture and firmness

  • Sculptra gradually restores structure and support from within

  • BBL + MOXI laser improve tone, texture, and overall skin renewal

  • Glo2Facial and DiamondGlow keep skin hydrated, healthy, and ready for results

  • Tox softens the expression lines that come with laxity

If we bring in Sofwave, it would add a non-invasive lifting option to that lineup.

Sofwave FAQ

Does Sofwave hurt? Most people describe brief bursts of heat. Built-in cooling helps keep it comfortable, and your provider can talk you through numbing options.

How many treatments will I need? Sofwave says visible results are possible after a single treatment. Some people choose more sessions based on their goals and how their skin responds.

How long do results last? Because Sofwave builds your own collagen, results develop gradually. Aging keeps going, though, so many people plan maintenance treatments over time. Your provider can suggest a schedule.

Can I combine Sofwave with other treatments? Often, yes. Combining it with collagen-building treatments like microneedling or Sculptra is common. The timing depends on your plan, so ask your provider.

Is Sofwave available at Urban You? Not yet. We're looking into it now, and your feedback helps us decide. Take the poll to share your thoughts.
