Dermal Filler: What to Expect (No Surprises, Just Results)

Thinking about filler but picturing duck lips, a frozen face or a week hiding at home? Let's clear that up.

Today's fillers are softer, smarter and more natural-looking than ever. Most people walk out of their appointment and straight back into their day.

If you're curious but have questions, you're in the right place. Here's exactly what to expect, from your first consult to your final results.

First, What Is Filler?

Most dermal fillers today are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar your body already makes. It's the same ingredient in your favorite hydrating serum, just in gel form and placed precisely beneath the skin.

HA loves water. It holds onto moisture, which is why it's so good at restoring volume, smoothing folds and adding definition. As we age, we naturally lose volume and our skin's own HA, so filler helps put back what time has taken.

Two things make HA filler so popular:

  • You see results right away. No waiting months to notice a difference.

  • It's temporary. Your body breaks it down naturally over time. And if needed, HA filler can be dissolved by your provider.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. The consult. We talk about your goals, look at your facial structure and build a personalized plan. This is the most important step.

  2. A week or so before. If your provider says it's OK, avoid blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and alcohol to lower your chance of bruising. Tell us if you get cold sores, especially before lip filler. Planning around a big event? Book at least 2 weeks ahead.

  3. Treatment day. We cleanse the area and may apply a numbing cream. Most fillers also contain lidocaine, a numbing agent, for extra comfort. The injections usually take about 30 minutes to an hour.

  4. Right after. You'll see a difference immediately. Some swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising is normal. Most people go right back to their day.

  5. Days 1 to 3. Swelling usually peaks here, especially in the lips. Don't judge your results yet. This is the "awkward phase," and it passes.

  6. Week 1 to 2. Swelling settles, the filler softens and integrates, and your real results show up.

  7. Your 2-week check-in. We'll see how everything settled and make any small tweaks if needed.

How long does it last? It depends on the product, the area and your body. Many results last from several months to a year or more. Results vary, and your provider will give you a realistic estimate for your plan.

Dermal Filler FAQs

Does filler hurt? Most people describe mild pressure or a pinch. Numbing cream and the lidocaine in most fillers keep you comfortable.

How long does swelling last after filler? Swelling usually peaks in the first 1 to 3 days and settles over 1 to 2 weeks. Lips tend to swell the most.

When will I see my final results? You'll see a change right away, but your final results show up once swelling settles, usually around 2 weeks.

How long does filler last? It depends on the product, the area and your body. Many results last from several months to a year or more.

Will I look overdone? Not with the right plan. Our providers focus on balance and natural-looking results, and Evolysse™ and RHA® are both designed to move with your face.

Can filler be reversed? Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved by your provider if needed.

What's the difference between filler and tox? Tox relaxes the muscles that cause lines when you move. Filler restores volume and smooths lines that are there even at rest. Many people use both.

Can men get filler? Absolutely. Jawline, chin and under-eye treatments are popular with men.

How far before an event should I get filler? At least 2 weeks, so swelling has time to settle.
